Called the ‘Paris of the Orient’ or the ‘Pearl of China,’ Shanghai reflects centuries of history mixed with modern-day culture. While in port, see the city’s most impressive sights on a full-day shore excursion by private, air-conditioned vehicle. Gain entry to the Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai Museum, a silk factory and the Fresh Water Pearl Gallery, including lunch. Your local guide will also accompany you to People’s Square, Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai Old Street and Xin Tian Di, Shanghai's entertainment district.

Meet your friendly guide at the Shanghai port after your cruise ship docks, and hop in your comfortable private vehicle for your full-day sightseeing tour of the city. First, head to the Jade Buddha Temple, built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1875-1909 AD), for a guided tour. Admire the large collection of Burmese jade statues as your guide tells you about the temple’s Shanghai Buddhist Institute and the monks who reside there.

Then, enjoy a visit to the Fresh Water Pearl Gallery for a fascinating lesson on pearl cultivation. You might be one of the lucky recipients of a complimentary gift – a beautiful freshwater pearl.

When you reach People’s Square in the city center, stroll around the large park, which occupies the site of a former horseracing course. Admire the greenery and the surrounding buildings, such as the Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai Art Museum.

Then, walk to the Shanghai Museum to view the bronze ware, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, coins and furniture on exhibit. Your guide will point out the museum’s permanent collection, which houses more than 120,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of history in China.

Your guide will accompany you to a local restaurant for a delicious Chinese lunch. Afterward, visit Shanghai Old Street and the charming Yuyuan Garden, enjoying classic sights from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Then, head to the Shanghai waterfront to walk along the Bund, a 2-mile-long (4-km) row of buildings that showcases pre-1949 architecture and site of the city’s financial and commercial center of the 1930s.

Next, enter the silk factory and learn how Chinese silk has been produced since the 14th century. Your guide can help you purchase some silk at bargain prices.

Finally, enjoy a drive to Xin Tian Di, Shanghai's latest entertainment district, passing lovely tree-lined streets and weathered European architecture in the former French Concession District. Stretch your legs along the two square blocks, where well-preserved brick buildings have been transformed into fashionable clubs, restaurants and boutiques, before your guide returns you to the Shanghai cruise port.

Enjoy a privately guided shore excursion to the picturesque towns of Suzhou and Zhouzhuang while in port in Shanghai. On this day trip by private vehicle, stroll through Suzhou's marvelous Net Master Garden and view its Grand Canal. You’ll explore Zhouzhuang's waterways on a Chinese-style gondola and dine on a Chinese lunch. With an expert guide, observe the traditional daily life in these centuries-old towns, situated within the Yangtze basin – a trip to be remembered!

After your cruise ship docks in Shanghai, your guide will take you by private vehicle to Suzhou, one of the oldest Chinese towns established around 600 BC in the Yangtze basin. As you explore the lovely environs, you’ll see why this village is often referred to as the ‘Venice of the East’ for its interconnected waterways.

Your guide will tell you how Suzhou was one of the few cities in China to emerge from Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution largely unchanged -- including gardens that remained almost intact. Stop at Net Master Garden, an exquisite example of a Ming dynasty garden, and admire its construction as a microcosm of the universe in a confined space, reflecting harmonious Chinese principles.

Next, head to the town's ancient city wall and view Suzhou’s Grand Canal before enjoying a guided tour of a silk-spinning factory. You’ll observe the ways Chinese silk has been produced since the 14th century, and then take a break for a Chinese-style lunch at a local establishment before heading to Zhouzhuang.

When you reach the water village of Zhouzhuang, float through the charming waterways aboard a Chinese-style gondola, and admire the town’s well-preserved architecture dating back more than 900 years. Your guide will point out some of the 60 carved-brick archways and 100 traditional courtyards of the buildings still in use since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Observe everyday life along the waterways – where residents do everything from shopping from boat vendors to washing their clothes – before your day trip ends with return transport to the Shanghai cruise port.

Make the most of even a one-day stop in Shanghai with a private shore excursion complete with local guide and driver. This fully customizable tour is adjustable to suit your interests but typically includes: The Bund area with the Splendid river view of the modern skyscrapers ( Oriental pearl TV tower, Shanghai tower , Jinao tower), Old Town bazaar and classic Ming dynasty Garden, People's Square, Jade Buddha Temple, and the French Concession, both Fuxing Park and Xintiandi.

As this is a private shore excursion, the schedule, duration, and activities are entirely up to you. However, the most popular itinerary begins with a pickup at Shanghai cruise terminal and starts with a visit to the city’s former French Concession.

Here, stop at Fuxing Park, where the French-style gardens pay homage to the park’s colonial beginnings, although there’s also a monument to the Communist heroes Marx and Engels. In the morning, the park offers a fantastic introduction to traditional Shanghai life as locals gather here to enjoy activities such as calligraphy, singing, and even ballroom dancing. Feel free to join in a dance if you wish!

Then, let your guide lead you through the French Concession, once the center of colonial life, and now the hottest and hippest neighborhood in Shanghai.

Hop back in your private vehicle and drive on to People’s Square, known as the heart of Shanghai. Besides being a great place to observe locals going about their daily life, the square is home to the famous Marriage Market during weekends, when local parents come to find a boyfriend or girlfriend for their single children.

If it's raining, you may wish to enjoy the alternative of either a visit to the world-class Shanghai Museum, with its fantastic selection of historic artefacts, or the fascinating Shanghai Urban Planning Museum (both with entrance fees at own expense).

For lunch, stop at a local restaurant to discover classic Shanghainese cuisine. Enjoy xiaolongbao soup dumplings, Shanghai-style noodles, or meat, fish, and vegetable dishes, washed down with plenty of tea (own expense).

Next, see more local life as you explore Shanghai's Old Town area. Wander through its narrow alleyways and colorful markets, and if you wish, shop for tea, antiques, Chinese seals, souvenirs, or even everyday items like clothes and chopsticks.

No visit to Shanghai would be complete without a stroll along The Bund or the Riverside Promenade (Binjiang Da Dao) that locals describe as a free museum of architecture for the varied styles on display.

As you enjoy the splendid views of the colonial-era architecture and the dramatic contemporary skyline across the River Huangpu, your guide will explain Shanghai’s international history.

Finally, it's back to the French Concession and its trendy Xintiandi area, where you can see yet again how Shanghai has moved with the times. The area's traditional Shanghai shikumen houses, built for upper-middle-class families in the 1920s and 1930s, have been converted into bars, coffee shops, stores, and restaurants, and make fantastic spots to watch the world go by.

Your tour finishes with a transfer back to your cruise ship or to the central Shanghai hotel of your choice. Please provide your choice of destination when you book.

Take in 100+ years of Chinese culture in the streets of Shanghai! From the labyrinth-like nong tangs to the hustle and bustle of modern downtown life, you’ll learn the secrets of this fascinating city. Wander the Nanjing road, lit up with lights like Times Square, fall in love with the art deco buildings and historic backstreets, and top it all off with the view of one of the greatest skylines on this planet.

From the 1920s through to today, you’re getting it all on this Shanghai street tour that shows off the city’s history, culture, food, and daily local life.

After being picked up at the port, your guide will drive you to the start point for this Shanghai walking tour. We’ll begin with a view of the historic city cathedral, which was spared during both WWII and China’s Cultural Revolution and used as a factory in the interim. From there, we’ll head into the city’s abandoned nong tangs (Shanghai’s sister version of Beijing’s hutongs) — decaying, quiet narrow streets and alleys, full of propaganda posters. Spot the signs referring to Japanese war crimes, and rants against the menace from the East, as well as posters showcasing classic Shanghai stage and screen celebrities.

We’ll get way lost in the labyrinthine nong tangs, weaving around the lanes of back alleys where tourists don’t tread and Chinese life goes on in the backstage of Shanghai. Stroll past carpenters and craftsmen, and see the trash collectors and street sweepers who creep by. You might even spy the odd mahjong game, China’s classic pastime and an old staple of local entertainment. We’ll also get down and dirty in the outdoor market, browsing for fish and food, and seeing capitalism in action in a China that has moved away from Mao.

Next, we’ll hit our hunger at a famous pan-fried dumpling establishment of Shanghai street food, and grab some sheng jian (pan-fried soup dumplings filled with your choice of pork, wild vegetables, or spicy crawfish and shrimp).

We’ll then head into the 1930s, and check out art deco hotels like the prestigious Park Hotel and Shanghai Sports Bureau as we head toward the Champs Elysee of Shanghai, Nanjing road. But before we reach that famous pedestrian street, we will stop and try our luck at the “marriage market” in People’s Square Park, where parents hope to find mates for their children.

Once at Nanjing Lu, we’ll see the postcard-like view of the buildings, blazing neon signs, riverfront, and the massive skyscrapers that have become emblematic of the new China. We’ll snake our way through the backstreets, check out different types of street food, and visit a street stall selling old books by the weight. We’ll also visit the Peace Hotel at the water’s edge — a classic stately structure representative of the city’s birth.

After a lovely lunch stop on the bund (at your own cost), with a vista of the iconic Shanghai skyline and rambling river, we’ll board the shuttle back to the port to get you back to the ship on time for sailing on to your next destination!
