Founded in around 600 B.C., Suzhou is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze basin and is known for its beautiful gardens. With its interconnected waterways and beautiful environment, the city is often referred to as the Venice of the East. Suzhou was one of the few cities in China to escape the ravages of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution and its famous gardens survived almost intact.

Upon arrival in Suzhou, your first stop is the Net Master Garden, the town's best example of a model Ming Dynasty garden. The gardens embody the harmonious principles of Chinese garden construction, which dictate that gardens should re-create a microcosm of the universe in a confined space.

After enjoying Suzhou's gardens, you'll view the town's ancient city wall and Grand Canal. You'll also take a tour of a silk-spinning factory to see how Chinese silk has been produced since the 14th century.

After lunch, it's time to visit the water village of Zhouzhuang and board a Chinese-style gondola to cruise the town's beautiful waterways. Zhouzhuang's simple, well-preserved architecture dates back more than 900 years. The majority of residences were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and nearly 100 classic courtyards and 60 carved-brick archways are still in use. In this water village, locals live their life on the waterways, continuing to carry out everyday activities on the water, from washing clothes to shopping from vendors in boats.

Your air-conditioned coach picks you up at your centrally located Shanghai hotel in the early morning to start the 3-hour drive from Shanghai to Hangzhou.

During the drive, your guide introduces you to the rich history and culture of Hangzhou, which dates back more than 2,000 years.

When you arrive in Hangzhou, start at the renowned Six Harmonies Pagoda (Liuhe Pagoda), a masterpiece of Chinese architecture. The towering 196 foot (60 meter) octagonal pagoda overlooks the Qiantang River, and inside a spiral staircase ascends to the top of the seven story building, providing sweeping views of the lush surroundings. Next to the pagoda, visit a small museum with replicas of various ancient Chinese pagoda styles.

Continue to Meijiawu Tea Village, located in the rural foothills of the West Lake district. The village showcases one of the finest tea varieties in the world, Xihu Longjing Tea, aka Dragon Well Tea, and Meijiawu is said to grow the best Longjing tea. During your visit, experience the art of a traditional tea ceremony and gain insight into this important part of Chinese culture.

Afterward have lunch, then drive over to West Lake, an expansive lake surrounded by gardens, pagodas, temples and mountains. A UNESCO World Heritage site, West Lake has inspired artists and influenced garden design in China, Japan and Korea over the centuries.

Board a boat for a cruise on the lake that ends at Flower Harbor. Disembark and stroll around the lush gardens and Red Carp Pond, where multitudes of fish swim frenetically, creating a contrast to the serene forest surroundings.

If time allows, your guide takes you to a scenic area called 9 Creeks and 18 Gullies. Walk along a path that passes picturesque tea plantations on terraced hills, streams, waterfalls, and quaint rest stops such as a pond with small pavilion and tea house.

Seven Treasure Town is an ancient village located outside of Shanghai. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Seven Treasures became a prosperous marketplace, known for its cloth, yarn, carpentry, rice wine and water. The textiles were treasured all over the world, with samples from the era still being displayed at the Great Museum of London. That Buddhist temple was built in 1900 in the late Qing Dynasty to keep the two jade Buddha statues. Then you will pay a visit to Shanghai Museum. Established in 1952, Shanghai Museum has a collection of more than 120000 rare cultural pieces from the Old Stone Age to modern days.

After the Chinese style lunch in a local restaurant, you will continue to visit the 450-year-old Yuyuan Garden, a famous classical Chinese style garden which was originally built in the Ming Dynasty.
