Sample traditional Shanghainese specialties while immersed in the atmospheric streets of Old Shanghai on this 3-hour walking tour for food-lovers. Your guide includes up to eight tastings, with a mixture of street food stands and traditional eateries. Try classic specialties like 'sheng jian bao' (pan-fried dumplings) to local favorites like Bullfrog stir-fry.

Travel off-the-beaten-path with your guide when you set off from People's Square on your 3-hour food walking tour. Immerse in local Shanghainese culture and cuisine while you weave through the backstreets of Old Shanghai and eat at a mixture of traditional restaurants and street food stands. Along the way, pass by some of Shanghai's last remaining laneway houses, or shikumen. Experience vibrant streets where vendors from Xinjiang and Gansu provinces sell traditional foods. Eight tastings are included, and add up to a full meal.

Sample tasting menu, subject to change:

  • Xiao long bao: A classic Shanghai specialty, these dumplings are made with a thin skin of dough and stuffed with a seasoned minced pork.
  • Sheng jian bao: Another famous Shanghainese snack food, these dumplings are pan-fried with a doughy exterior and a meat and soup filling.
  • Xie ke huang: Crab shell pastry is another Shanghai specialty; the crust is meant to look like a crab shell. Fillings include green onions, pork, crab meat, shrimp, mashed beans, and sugar.
  • Chang shou mian: Traditional, handmade Shanghainese wheat noodles served in a meat-based soup. The recipe for these extra long noodles was passed down from a former royal chef.
  • Xinjiang (stone-oven naan): Originally from Kashgar in Xingjiang province, these vendors make traditional bread in a stone oven.
  • Stir-fried bullfrog: Cooked with green pepper, it's an exceptionally popular local meal.
  • Deep-fried wontons: These pork dumplings are served with vinegar: surprisingly delicious.
  • Yellow wine: Traditional Chinese wine made from fermented rice.
  • Popular Shanghainese desserts

This private tour will allow you to experience Shanghai in the most comfortable, relaxed, and flexible way. Visit places such as Fuxing Park, the Bund, even Shanghai's old town. Your English-speaking tour guide will be more than happy to adjust the itinerary and attractions, and accommodate you and your party to let you learn and know more about Shanghai.

After your driver picks you up from your hotel lobby, the tour will begin in Fuxing park. Created in 1909, it was once the largest park in Shanghai and is affiliated with the French Concession. In the early morning, the park has lots of dance-lovers, card players, poker enthusiasts, and Tai Chi solo/group artists. It is the best spot to experience the local lifestyle.

Next, stroll along the world’s most famous promenade, The Bund, where you can discover the old European style architecture. View the buildings built circa 1930 in Puxi, west of Huangpu river, and the modern skyscrapers built over the last 25 years in Pudong, east of Huangpu river. Visit Chenghuangmiao, also known as Shanghai Old town and Yuyuan garden, a Chinese classic privately owned garden built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty.

After lunch, the tour will proceed to Renmin Park in People’s square. In the Shanghai Marriage Market, if you are lucky, you will meet some Parents of unmarried adults flock to the park every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. to trade information on their children. Afterwards, visiting Xintiandi, where you can discover the Shikumen Museum. It is a traditional Shanghainese architectural style combining Western and Chinese elements that first appeared in the 1860s. At the height of their popularity, there were 9000 shikumen-style buildings in Shanghai, comprising 60% of the total housing stock of the city, but today the proportion is much lower as most Shanghainese live in large apartment buildings

Finally, visit Tianzifang, an arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated residential area in the french concession. Once this tour is done, you will be taken back to your hotel.

Combine a sightseeing tour of Shanghai highlights with a more authentic city experience at the home of a local family on this full-day tour. With an informative guide, you'll enjoy personalized attention as you stroll through Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai Old Town, explore the art-laden alleyways of Tianzifang, visit a wet market, and learn how to make wontons with a local Shanghai family for lunch. Finish with a stop at a silk factory and a Huangpu River cruise.

After hotel pickup, start your full-day tour with a visit to Shanghai Old Town, the old walled city also known as Nan Shi.

Stroll with your guide and your group through Yuyuan Garden, an imperial Ming-era garden situated next to Chenghuangmiao, aka City God Temple. Admire spring and summer blooms amid the pine, willow and cherry trees (depending on the season), and visit the adjacent bazaar.

Next, follow your guide on foot to a traditional Chinese wet market where you’ll catch an eyeful of fresh produce, fish and seafood sold by busy vendors. Then venture to a local home to get a feel for Chinese family life in the city. Learn how to make Shanghai-style wontons, and sit down for lunch to discuss daily living in Shanghai.

After lunch, continue your tour to Tianzifang, a renovated residential area in the French Concession teeming with arts and crafts. Meander through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways, passing handicraft shops, cafes, art studios and galleries, and learn about the Western and Chinese elements of the preserved Shikumen style of architecture.

Head toward your final activity of the day — a cruise on the Huangpu River — stopping on the way at a silk factory to discover the steps of silk production, a process that dates back 4,000 years. Once you're aboard the boat on the river, glimpse more than 100 years of architectural styles and admire panoramic views of both sides of Shanghai.

At the end of the day, your guide drops you off at your hotel.
